Evangelism through the arts

July 2000 saw 10,000 evangelists and church leaders from all over the world converge on the Netherlands for a major international conference, sponsored by the Billy Graham Evangelistic Association.

The aim of the nine-day conference was to prepare and equip the next generation of evangelists and to offer formal training to help in their ministry.

So it was fitting that the massive Congress Centre in Amsterdam was also the venue for the Pilgrim Hearts Trust's first international exhibition.

Delegates from 185 countries attending Amsterdam 2000, for teaching and discussion on every aspect of evangelism, had the opportunity to see the Trust's work at first hand and witness the impact it had.

The exhibition featured the paintings of Southampton artist Anne House, whose work provides a powerful witness. Anne aims to communicate the reality of Jesus in a style that non-Christians, as well as those with a strong faith, can understand.

Due to the level of interest in the “Hearts through Arts” approach, the stand was quadrupled in size and demonstrated to many the value of such creative witness.

Pilgrim Hearts Director, Elaine Chalmers-Brown, said the response to the exhibition had been mind blowing.

"Anne's work always speaks volumes to those who see it. At Amsterdam 2000 we saw how her paintings cut across all cultural and social barriers. That is what our work at Pilgrim Hearts is all about. We see time and again how the creative arts can be used not only to support mission, but to reach out in a way that speaks to some who might not otherwise hear the message."

Pilgrim Hearts was founded in April 2000 to promote Christianity and to support those who share its mission.

 New co-operation with homeless charities.

Pilgrim Hearts will join forces with Trinity Housing in Uxbridge and Slough Homeless Our Concern (“SHOC”) in Slough. We plan to offer arts workshops to clients of Trinity and SHOC working closely with these two charities. Pilgrim Hearts Director, Elaine Chalmers-Brown says “Our workshops will offer the homeless in Slough and Uxbridge the chance to discover their creative talents and so increase their self esteem. We will also train them in the social and communication skills they need to give them a better chance to find work and turn their lives around.” It’s hoped that, if the workshops go well Pilgrim Hearts could work in closer partnership with SHOC and TRINITY.
